The Glynn Environmental Coalition (GEC) is recruiting two (2) motivated, self-starting individuals to join our company as a Canvasser. As part of our Safe Seafood Outreach Initiative, you conduct one-on-one outreach with Brunswick/Glynn County fishermen and their families about local seafood consumption advisories. This outreach is essential for fishermen and their families to understand the existence of contaminated seafood and how to mitigate potential health impacts from overconsuming locally caught contaminated seafood.
The Canvasser position requires you to have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to bridge conversation gaps quickly and confidently. This is a physically active position, meaning you must be able to stand and walk for an extended period of time throughout the workday. The ideal candidate will have canvassing and/or customer service experience. The Organizer will travel locally around Brunswick and may occasionally participate in state or regional environmental conferences or meetings. Some early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required.
Essential duties and responsibilities
• Facilitate one-on one outreach within target areas • Collect data on outreach, submit data weekly to the main office • Attend community events located in target areas to share information about local seafood advisories • Assist with development of social media content regarding canvassing activities • Assist in distributing advisory information to local businesses
Qualifications
• Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license • Excellent conversational and interpersonal communication skills; comfortable with public speaking • Ambitious individual who self-motivates, creative problem-solver, and a self-starter • Time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment • Ability to work independently and as part of a team • Moderate computer proficiency; basic office skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google docs; competent social media skills across platforms Preferred Qualifications • Multilingual ability a plus • Passionate about improving the quality of life for residents the Brunswick and Glynn County community and alleviating environmental injustices • Excellent interpersonal and cultural sensitivity to respectfully work with historically marginalized communities Prior education, work, or volunteer experience related to campaign canvassing, environmental justice, climate, and other environmental issues
Education and Experience
• High school diploma, or on track for graduation; GED certificate (must be 18 or older to apply).
Salary/Salary Range
Compensation: $17.50/hr. After an initial 3-month evaluation period, compensation can increase up to $20/hr.
