The part-time Adult Literacy Instructor is responsible for providing adult literacy and basic education (reading, language arts, and math) instruction to adult learners enrolled with the Literacy Alliance. The position supervises adult learners, manages a multi-level classroom or small group, and develops or adapts curriculum and materials, and may work or oversee volunteers involved in the class or group.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Instruction: Teaches specialized classroom or small group sessions. Provides opportunities for foundational skills development among adult learners, manages a multi-level classroom, and prepares lessons and activities appropriate for students. Lesson Planning and Curriculum: Utilize adult education standards and resources to develop classroom curriculum, lesson plans and objectives aligned to student goals. Candidates with experience in writing curriculum for contextual learning preferred. Record Keeping: Monitors, records, and evaluates the progress of program participants. Maintains student attendance and achievement records. Records any communication with students into the student database. Input class data into the database on a monthly basis. Maintains physical filing system. Training on internal data management software is provided. Communications: Communicates with program participants and partners on a regular basis to increase retention and completion rates. Professional Development: Takes ownership of ongoing professional development through self-study and/or attending professional trainings offered by the Literacy Alliance or partners. Accountability: Adheres to personnel policy procedures, including attendance policies. Is present and prepared during normal work hours. Informs staff, volunteers, and/or partners of any changes in personal schedule in advance. Updates weekly schedule on shared calendar. Working as a Team: Fill in as a substitute teacher for absentee instructors dependent on schedules and availability. Support Learning Outside Class: Assist in staffing regular computer lab/study hall hours at the Literacy Alliance office to help students with asynchronous learning activities.


Excellent oral and written communication skills; detail-oriented, good interpersonal skills, and able to manage multiple tasks/deadlines at once. Ability to conduct training sessions and presentations to small groups. Ability to work independently and proactively with minimal supervision. Competency in the Google Suite office productivity software. Must have reliable transportation. Must be able to pass a background check.

Education and Experience

Experience, education or interest in conducting adult education, literacy, GED or similar instruction.
