Summary
The role of Volunteer Coordinator in the homeless shelter environment is to support the mission and vision of the agency through the recruitment, management and recognition of volunteer support from the community at large. This position works closely with staff to identify the need for volunteer support throughout the agency and is responsible for communicating these opportunities to the community at large. The Volunteer Coordinator interacts with residents, staff, volunteers, and community partners with courtesy and respect and always presents a positive public image of the Sulzbacher Center both internally and externally.
This is a full-time, exempt position which requires a flexible schedule based on the needs of the agency. This position includes evenings, weekends and some holidays.
RESIDENT, GUEST and INTERNAL CUSTOMER FOCUS
The Volunteer Coordinator is sensitive to emotional, spiritual and practical needs of residents, families, guests and staff members in all interactions. Provides positive feedback and comments about the quality of work and effort to co workers and supervisors. Adjusts priorities and schedules to meet specific customer needs. Reports and/or corrects problems related to safety, cleanliness and comfort of patients and work areas. Universal Precautions and Infection Control techniques are followed. Understands their own role in facility safety plans and procedures related to fire, weather and other disasters.
Essential duties and responsibilities
1. Recruit and assign appropriate volunteers to expand and improve the services and resources available to residents. 2. Supplement the work of paid staff and improve the center's daily operations through volunteer activities; interacting with individuals and community organizations, including clubs, corporations, religious organizations and schools. 3. Recruit, screen, orient and assign volunteers for on-going programs, special projects and events, according to center policies, in order to expand and improve the services and resources available to residents, supplement the work of paid staff and improve the center's daily operations. 4. Ensure that volunteers are appropriately screened, trained and supervised. 5. Manage complete volunteer documentation, including the status of applicants, current and in-active volunteers in Verified Volunteers. 6. Educate the community about homelessness, raise awareness of the center's programs and 7. Promote volunteer and donor support for the center 8. Respond to volunteer inquiries within 24-hours. 9. Develop and research new opportunities for fundraising using online tools and social media outlets. 10. Responsible for execution of all electronic communication to donor database including Constant Contact communications. 11. Assist the Chief Development Officer in managing the agency’s on-line presence including the agency website and all social media outlets. 12. Track participation in community outreach activities, as well as on-site tours. 13. Cultivate relationships with volunteers, in-kind donors and partner agencies through regular communications, including phone calls, e-mails and other means of contact. 14. Plan and execute periodic volunteer recognition events, as well as on-going volunteer and in-kind donor recognition. 15. Supervise the submission of a monthly summary to the Director of Program Funding which includes monthly and year-to-date volunteer statistics. 16. Support the activities of the Center's development department, including but not limited to educational tours, volunteer and donor recruitment events, participating in off-site public speaking engagements, The Sulzbacher Beaches Clinic Walk, Transformations, Give a Good Night Campaign, The Home Team, holiday food and gift drives and other fundraising efforts and center activities. 17. Interact with residents, staff, volunteers and the public with courtesy and respect. 18. Present a positive public image of The Sulzbacher Center. 19. In collaboration with the development team and relevant center staff, develop goals and strategies for cultivating volunteer support and community outreach from the community. 20. Attend professional volunteer management meetings, networking and training sessions. Maintain familiarity with current concepts, practices and procedures, including legal requirements, relating to the management of volunteers and solicitation and acknowledgement of in-kind donations.
Qualifications
• Outstanding oral, written and public speaking skills. • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook, Word and Excel software packages. • Organized, self-motivated with strong initiative and work ethic and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. • Detail-oriented and able to manage information accurately. • Excellent interpersonal skills. Must enjoy and be able and willing to work effectively with a wide variety of personalities. • Excellent customer service skills, computer and social media skills. • Able to establish cooperative working relationships with residents, staff, volunteers, donors and community partners. • Able to work with limited resources to find creative and practical solutions to the center's unmet volunteer and in-kind donations needs through community outreach. • Flexible, enthusiastic and energetic. • Professional manner and appearance.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree required • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in PR/Media relations
