Overview: This intensive workshop offers participants the opportunity to delve into the principles and practices of permaculture design with a focus on transforming backyard spaces into thriving ecosystems. Through hands-on activities, guided instruction, and collaborative design sessions, participants will gain the knowledge and skills to create sustainable, regenerative landscapes that produce food, support biodiversity, and enhance overall well-being.
Day 1:

Session 1: Introduction to Permaculture

Overview of permaculture principles and ethics

Understanding the interconnectedness of elements in a design

Session 2: Site Analysis and Assessment

Techniques for observing and assessing backyard spaces

Identifying resources, constraints, and opportunities

Conducting a basic site analysis exercise

Session 3: Soil Health and Regeneration

Importance of soil health in permaculture design

Strategies for improving soil fertility and structure

Session 4: Design Principles and Strategies

Applying permaculture design principles to backyard landscapes

Introduction to design elements such as zones and sectors

Design exercise: Mapping out zones and sectors in participants’ backyards

Day 2:

Session 5: Food Forests and Edible Landscapes

Introduction to food forests and perennial polycultures

Selecting and integrating edible plants into backyard designs

Designing guilds and companion planting arrangements

Session 6: Medicinal and Culinary Herbs

Exploring the benefits of growing medicinal and culinary herbs

Identifying and selecting herbs suitable for backyard cultivation

Designing herb gardens and incorporating them into overall designs

Session 7: Putting It All Together: Design Workshop

Hands-on design workshop with experienced permaculture designers

Individual and group design exercises tailored to participants’ backyard spaces

Feedback and guidance from instructors on design concepts and implementation strategies
