JOB SUMMARY: Guided by the Mission and Charter of L’Arche, the Medical Support Assistant assists the organization and Community Care Director with addressing the health care needs of each Core Member (person with intellectual/development disabilities receiving services from L’Arche) by ensuring the consistent implementation of all treatment plans, reporting, and needed follow-up.

Essential duties and responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains a current knowledge base of licensure rules and regulations as they pertain to medical care. May participate in regulatory inspections, evaluations and follow-up. Gets trained and is knowledgeable in medication administration/observation. Serves as a support resource to the House Coordinators, homes, day program, and program staff with scheduling, transporting and reporting of medical appointments (including those needed for grant reporting). In cooperation with the House Coordinator, schedules all appointments with health care providers (doctors, dentists, specialists, etc) and for blood work/other required testing and all needed follow-up appointments with health care providers and/or labs. Serves as a liaison between the pharmacy, homes and day program and relays all pertinent information to both. Serve as a liaison between families and guardians of Core Members, as necessary, to support medical needs and care. Serves as a support resource to the House Coordinators and Team for medical and psychological health. Attends team and/or home meetings as directed by leadership. Understands and is able to verbalize the medical history of each Core Members as well as current medications and needs. Responsible for keeping demographic sheets and medical binders current. Available for on-call support of the team, including during Core Member hospitalization. Ensures that unused or expired medications are disposed of properly. Sends reminders to House Coordinators of any medical appointments for the upcoming week or any follow up that may be needed during that month. Trains Assistants (Direct Support Professionals) in the proper use of the various forms pertaining to medical issues, i.e. Change of Health Status Report, Medical Appointment Report, Incident Report. Assists the House Coordinator and Assistants with the current and proper filing of Change of Health Status Reports and Medical Appointment Reports. Participates in regularly scheduled supervision meetings with Leadership. Provides medical updates at leadership meetings. Completes daily documentation as needed and compiles, reviews and submits annual medical documentation and forms. Provides coverage in houses when needed. Special projects, as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Understanding of medical field, healthcare and health-related issues Ability to work with different computer systems or willingness to learn and be trained. Must be able to work independently as well as with others in a team approach. Must be able to communicate well in diverse situations and be willing to manage conflict in a healthy manner. Strong, respectful communicator. Has a commitment to personal and spiritual growth. Must hold a valid Florida Driver’s License and must maintain a good driving record. Must clear a level 2 background screening. Medical knowledge preferred.

Education and Experience

Three years of experience in the field of Developmental Disabilities or educational/other experience that brings comparable skills. Minimal education requirement is a high school diploma or GED. College graduate preferred. Prior L’Arche experience or a demonstrated understanding of L’Arche mission and values.

Salary/Salary Range

$17-19 hourly
