Description
Under limited supervision, the Director of Development is responsible for creating, leading, and executing a comprehensive strategy to grow mission-driven fundraising with a consistently improving return on investment. This role works closely with leadership, staff, donors, and volunteers to resource the Mission’s work so that homeless and needy men, women and families, have their lives transformed spiritually, physically, and mentally for productive lifestyles.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Responsibilities This job description is not all-inclusive and may include other responsibilities as assigned. 1. Serve as an active member of the senior leadership team, shaping the overall strategic direction of the organization and contributing to cross-departmental collaboration. 2. Develop and implement departmental strategies, policies, and procedures that support fundraising growth, operational efficiency, and risk mitigation. 3. Lead strategic planning for all development efforts, anticipating trends in philanthropy and aligning fundraising strategy with mission priorities. 4. Collaborate on the development, forecasting, and management of the annual development budget, ensuring sound stewardship and alignment with organizational goals. 5. Provide spiritual and professional leadership to the Development staff, building a healthy team culture and facilitating growth through training, coaching, and accountability. 6. Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging new ideas—especially in social enterprise—that contribute to long-term mission sustainability. 7. Design and execute a comprehensive major donor strategy to increase giving—both in total dollars and as a percentage of revenue—through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. 8. Oversee a portfolio of up to 300 donors, maintaining active relationships and ensuring timely, personalized engagement across all giving levels. 9. Research and qualify prospective donors—individual, corporate, and foundation—to expand the donor pipeline and secure major, annual, and capital gifts. 10. Lead corporate donor engagement strategy, cultivating partnerships that align with business objectives and the Mission’s needs. 11. Actively build and maintain relationships with church partners, engaging congregations through speaking engagements, volunteerism, and giving opportunities. 12. Represent the Mission in the community through intentional relationship-building with key stakeholders, civic groups, peer organizations, and media to enhance awareness and collaboration. 13. Oversee the planning and execution of donor campaigns, including all direct mail, digital, and print appeals, ensuring consistency in message and timing. 14. Maximize the functionality and reporting capabilities of the donor CRM system to support fundraising strategies and decision-making. 15. Lead the evaluation, planning, and execution of fundraising events, ensuring strong ROI and alignment with mission advancement. 16. Direct all public relations and marketing efforts, ensuring consistent messaging, brand strength, and visibility across all communication platforms. 17. Serve as liaison to outside consultants (e.g., capital campaigns, branding firms) to leverage specialized expertise in advancing development goals. 18. Provide leadership and oversight to reception and volunteer engagement, ensuring a welcoming and mission-aligned experience for all. 19. Monitor community developments related to homelessness, addiction, and poverty; build partnerships with aligned service providers and advocates. 20. Prepare timely reports and updates for the Executive Director and Board to track progress toward goals and inform strategic decision-making. 21. As opportunities arise, share your personal Christian faith, offer prayer, or provide spiritual encouragement consistent with the mission and values of the organization. Major Duties 1. Cultivate, solicit, and steward major donor relationships, including the development of new prospects. 2. Manage all grant research and applications to foundations, corporations, and associations for major, capital, annual, and special gifts. 3. Track donor interactions, moves management, and giving histories through accurate record-keeping and analysis. 4. Ensure appropriate engagement strategies are implemented to maximize major donor giving and retention. 5. Lead the creation and execution of the organization’s marketing and public relations plan. 6. Evaluate new development initiatives with risk analyses, business plans, and projections to assess feasibility and financial impact.
Qualifications
• Must provide a clear Biblical testimony of a personal experience of receiving by faith Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. • Understands Christian principles, exemplifies them, and shares with other staff and persons served. • Maintains an exemplary Christian lifestyle, affirms the CRM Statement of Faith, Code of Ethics and Position Statements. • Enjoys people and can work with diverse populations. • Can work in harmony with other staff. • Ensures strict confidentiality is maintained. • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
Education and Experience
1. Minimum of five years of leadership and managerial experience, including direct fundraising experience. 2. Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s preferred. 3. Proven ability to respond to sensitive inquiries and build trust across a wide range of constituents. 4. Excellent public speaking skills, capable of effectively presenting to churches, civic groups, and community leaders. 5. Strong managerial, organizational, planning, communication, and interpersonal skills. 6. Courage to lead directly and compassionately, with a coaching and mentoring mindset. 7. High-level strategic and operational planning skills. 8. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other donor database systems. 9. Demonstrated ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities. 10. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. 11. Ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce and donor base. 12. Ability to develop, plan, and implement both short- and long-term fundraising strategies. 13. Valid driver’s license required. 14. Must affirm the organization’s Statement of Faith and Position Statements.
